Campi liberi”

JOSEPH MATE’

FREE FIELDS”
The works of Mate appear to be generated by a training process that takes place on the canvas, in the willingness to let emerge the soul sensations that urge. So the figurative and the informal have no value if not at the level of contingent definitions.
Within his paintings live the creative freedom, the overwhelming need to lay down their very lives, in a total inventive spontaneity that can only free itself from any aesthetic formulas and repudiate the repetition of reality, to invent forms.
The theme of the “free field” says the gardens of his youth not lived and observed through a closed window behind his pain and suffering.
Behind what might appear only a composition of color and sign, behind the explosion of the gesture that is now more free and fast, now more restrained and thoughtful, there's the fervor of the imagination that operates the choices urinate in cycles, the desire movement or to give the story quiet, to leave autonomy to 'invention, but always giving it the discipline that links one by one the elements of the work and the artist that makes it recognizable even at different times of his mood. And so each work becomes the epitome of the universe. Colors, white or gray, lives the breakdown of all the colors that speak of the beauty of the world. The shapes arise by the automatism of the sudden, almost casual gesture (be it a brush or spatula). The concern is no longer - as in the artists who have avowedly inspired (Santomaso, Widow, Afro, Pollock) - to circumvent the mimesis of reality, but rather the need to give voice to the emotional dimension of the human condition in relation to creation, to appreciate and discover the secret that is always inherent in people and things and that artist would like to reveal to move beyond the apparent surface of what you show to our senses and our reason.
